His is a large 16″ high and 3 1/2″ by 2 1/2+ base cast iron very heavy 13 lb. Doorstop of the Admiral lord nelson. I did a lot of research on this piece because the name on the bottom “C H McCowan” is not very common. But the good news is that it is in fact this name that makes this piece both early and authentic. I found a cast iron – iron marked. McCowan Cincinnati with the same exact lettering type as this one. I was able to trace a McCowan Co. In Cincinnati Ohio that manufactured cast iron pipes in a newspaper The Cincinnati Enquirer from Cincinnati, Ohio June 24, 1891 Page 5. Also not being an expert at first glance I thought the paint did not look old but rather stained somehow to look old. Maybe this was originally all black and someone painted it at some time.
